163 - EU misses deadline for new 2035 climate target
COP30 approaching

What happened? ♻️
EU environment ministers failed to agree on an updated 2035 climate target by the UN deadline, pushing the decision to later this fall.
The delay stems from internal splits over ambition levels and sectoral burdens.
It risks denting the bloc’s credibility just weeks before COP30 in Belém, where countries are expected to show stronger NDCs aligned with the Paris Agreement.
China is expected to file on time; Australia already has.
Why it mattters?
Here some main reason why clear timing is important:
Signal to markets: A clear EU target guides trillions in clean-tech investment; hesitation can raise financing costs and stall projects in grids, storage, heat pumps, and EV supply chains.
Diplomacy leverage: The EU often brokers deals between high-ambition coalitions and large emitters - arriving without a number weakens that role.
Carbon math: Every year of delay narrows the 1.5–2°C window and shifts reductions into later, harder (and costlier) years. The optics also clash with the growing non-state momentum you’ll see at Climate Week NYC, where over 1,000 events feature businesses doubling down on climate despite political pushback.

What to watch next?
Revised EU proposal: Track whether a compromise lands near the Commission’s higher-ambition pathway (consistent with a steep 2030s decline) or a softer glidepath that backloads cuts.
COP30 dynamics: Brazil wants tangible progress on finance and nature; the EU’s final number will shape pressure on the US, China, and major producers. UN climate leadership is urging governments to pivot from alarm to opportunity framing—jobs, health, competitiveness—backed by record private green investment.
Corporate alignment: Many firms tout net-zero, but few align capex with targets. Watch for procurement, PPAs, and supply-chain rules filling the policy gap in the near term.
