Sicily 🧡
During my time at university, I remember that I learned lots of theoretical concepts about economics, how the world works, how to optimize choice, and the like.
One of those concepts was "trade-offs."
Of course, in strict economic terms, everything was then pinned and understood in terms of money. Choices should have been quantified, a value attached—a monetary one—and whatever had the highest payout should be taken.
Life has too many variables.
Sometimes, you cannot simply compute. Sometimes you cannot calculate everything. You cannot trade off easily.
Somehow, though, I do tend to do so—and as I do it, I strongly advise whoever reads this not to.
I am sitting now. On the balcony, in the countryside of northern Sicily.
Small wind breezes; I can see the olive tree in front of me, with the leaves slightly turning and twisting. It is beautiful. It is golden. Now is the golden hour. Photo is attached.
How do I trade this off with money, status? Leaving again, for what?
Purpose 🧡
This is the key.
A lot of people do not know it—a lot do. What is the purpose of your life?
Lots of people search for it, lots of people get lost during the search, and lots of people just wander, waiting, hoping, thinking that they might find it in the midst of their scattered brains.
You cannot trade it off, purpose.
You cannot buy it, you cannot sell it, you simply cannot.
But you better try, and fail, and try again to find it. Find it. Because whoever has it has the world in its own hands.
Now what?
Why did I write this post?
Because my generation is lost. Am I pessimistic, cynical, or just dumb to write this?
I think I am right, but I do not want to be misunderstood or sound like “I know everything”. I think I do know a little; I know that the world today is a strange place. Always has been, maybe, difficult, with problems to handle and solutions to find. And this polycrisis, as they call it, has deep roots. And people lost their purpose, preoccupied, lonely.
Loneliness nowadays is killing. We have actively engineered a lonely society, with no purpose attached to it.
Why do you do what you do? What do you trade off daily, with no purpose?
