From issuing billions in green bonds to fostering collaboration between banks and businesses, the Spanish financial sector is proving that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand.

Spain sustainable finance landscape 🌱
The Spanish market for sustainable and responsible investment (ISR) has shown substantial growth, reaching €411.33 billion in managed assets by the end of 2023.
This represents 84% of the national collective investment market (without real-estate), a clear direction to the increasing integration of ESG criteria across portfolios.
Dominance of ESG: 49% of all managed assets in Spain are aligned with at least one ESG criterion. This reflects a stable trend over the past decade, with notable peaks such as 62% in 2022.
Green Bonds: The Spanish government and private entities have actively issued green bonds to finance renewable energy projects, energy efficiency initiatives, and sustainable infrastructure.
Sustainability Sandbox: Spain launched an innovative regulatory "sandbox" in 2023 to encourage financial institutions to experiment with sustainable finance technologies and solutions in a controlled environment.

Also Spanish Banks such as Santander and BBVA are setting ambitious green finance targets. Moreover, Spain’s National Energy and Climate Plan outlines goals for renewable energy to constitute 74% of electricity generation by 2030, further reinforcing the country's dedication to climate goals.
