β€˜Tis the season to Go Green ♻️

This is not a post to take away the Christmas joy.

De facto, Christmas should be a time for joy, family, and festive traditions.

But have you ever wondered about its environmental cost?

From glittering lights to lavish feasts, holidays can leave a hefty carbon footprint.

Did it get a consumption party? How many of our cherished customs are inadvertently contributing to climate change? And more importantly, what can we do about it without losing the magic of the season?

Let’s unwrap the impact of our holiday habits.

Environmental costs 🌱

Holiday traditions bring warmth and cheer, but their ecological impact can’t be ignored. Here are some eye-opening insights:

  • Christmas lights: twinkling lights on homes and trees contribute significantly to energy consumption. According to a study done in 2008 (!!!) in the U.S., holiday lighting uses approximately 6.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annuallyβ€”enough to power 14 million refrigerators.

  • Gift wrapping: It’s estimated that 227 miles of wrapping paper are discarded each year in the U.K., much of which is non-recyclable due to metallic or plastic components.

  • Christmas trees: Real or artificial? Real trees sequester carbon during their growth and are often biodegradable. However, artificial trees, primarily made from PVC, have a carbon footprint of about 40kg CO2β€”equal to driving 100 miles in a carβ€”and need to be reused for at least 10 years to offset their environmental impact.

  • Food waste: The festive season leads to an increase in food waste by 25%, with millions of pounds of uneaten food heading to landfills, generating methane, a potent greenhouse gas (Waste and Resources Action Programme - WRAP, 2023).

A gift to the planet

By making small, mindful changes to our holiday traditions, we can significantly reduce our environmental impact while still enjoying the festive spirit.

For eco-conscious individuals and investors, the shift toward sustainable celebrations reflects a growing market trend.

Companies offering green holiday productsβ€”like LED lights or eco-friendly gift wrapβ€”are gaining traction, making them worth considering.
